Hi folks,

IF I try again to make CX my own, means release Martin out of the burden to pay the bills, would you be ok with a migration to a different forum software with all the negative side effects it could bring?

Cheers
Michael

im fine with any changes

About how much money are we talking here? I can help out with about 100 €.
If I understood you right last time, there is no perfect solution for a forum software and there is a lot of time to spend there for just having something similar to this, right?
If it is not the money, what are you and the community missing concerning the forums?
I am fine with these forums, but I also don't mind if it changed. Even if it means loosing some functionality.

Rebranding could also help as with the time passing I am not sure anymore, if something with 'evil' associations is best and 'CerberusX' is pretty long. On the other hand: I like the icons @MikeHart made.

Phil7, thank you but you did enough already.

Regarding some negative side effects...
The images from the media area will be lost, plus the portal. The syntax highlighting would be different.

I'm at least not sceptical. It might hurt but it won't kill CX. And I'm talking both the forum change and the rebranding. No constructive proposals to the latter, just the wish it's something easier to pronounce than ssssserbrseggs

Let's start a brainstorming session without any restrictions and then later boil it down to something usefull.

When thinking about a new name I was too quickly restricting myself, therefore I would start with some categories to go wild with:
  • Animal names and scientific terms (kind of a heritage ;-) ) like: python, monkey, dog, cat, mouse, weasel, canis, lupus ...
  • mystic names like cerberus, hades, pegasus, ...
  • words and combinations, describing qualities of the tool like easy, fast, gamewell, fastdevelop, multigamedev, gamedev4all, freegametool...
  • Acronyms and Abbreviations like LASER, PC, CX, ...
  • Phantasy names, like Yoyo, mamamamamamamiii and everything else
If you can think of more categories as starters, tell us.
Don't get bothered by things like: "The name is allready in use, copyright issues, bad associations, difficulties in pronounciation"
The more ideas the better. No limits for this first round.

For myself I don't mind where the forums are and I don't mind the name as long as I can have my fun coding. Not sure the name in itself prevents people from using CerberusX...

You are right. There are a lot of things, that are more important than the name, but the name is something that can be changed now quite easily and without any harm to the community. I guess beeing able to pronounce the name easily and being able to write it down correctly if someone tells you about it, could be pretty helpful.

Here some ideas, based on simple words and translated via google translator.

Thats a great idea! Nice words. Greek and Latin could also be interesting.
Did you do this by hand?

Butterfly.. Buttersmooth.. ? Butter butter butter.
It's also basically a transformed M as in Monkey, so it shows where it comes from.

Butterfly in different languages : (I personally like the French one)

Papillon (French)
Gloria (Latin)
bīrabīro (Amharic)
Flutterby (original English name)

German Schmetterling; Falter not from schmettern, but schlagen, an old word for “butter”; Middle High German vivalter
Dutch vlinder, vijwouter
Danish sommerfugl
Norwegian sommerfugl, fivelde
Swedish fjäril fjärran: “distant”?
Italian farfalla from Latin
Russian бабочка (babochka) баба: “peasant woman”, бабушка (babushka): “granny”
Polish motyl
Slovenian metúlj same in Czech
Croatian leptir
Spanish mariposa posar: “to perch” or “rest”, mari- indicates “effeminate”?
Portuguese borboleta borboletear: “to flutter”, borbulhar: “to bubble”?
Greek ψυχή (psyche): “soul”; consider “spooky”
Latin papillio also means “tent”, hence also “pavilion”; see also Farsi
Romainian fluture
Latvian tauriņš taure: “trumpet” ?
Lithuanian drugelis
Scottish dalán-dé “god’s fire”
Irish féileacán
Albanian flutur
Farsi پروانه (parvâne)
Cherokee ᎧᎹᎹ (ka-ma-ma)
Navajo k’aalógii
Indonesian kupu-kupu
Hawawiian kamehameha
Sanskrit भंबीरा (bhaṅbīrī, to run swiftly)
Hindi तितली (titlī) /*parwāna (from Persian) -- what was this? doesn't seem to belong in Hindi*/
Hebrew פרפר (parpur)
Arabic فراش (farâsh)
Inuktitut ᑕᕐᕋᓕᑭᑖᖅ (tarralikitaaq)
Hungarian pillangó
Finnish perhonen perhoné: “fly”?
Turkish kelebek keles: brave, beautiful; bekâr: virgin ?
Korean 나비 also means “width”
Chinese 蝴蝶 (hú tíe) The bit 虫 that’s on the the left side of each character is the radical indicating “insect” or “worm”. Each character is sometimes used independently and in combinations with other characters to connote “butterfly”.

I quite like "Papillon" (being French I can't tell if it's hard to say or not in other languages) and what the word means : lightweight, elegant, flying around effortlessly, shapeshifting. Quite the opposite to what "Cerberus" means but since we're starting over why not?

personally, I think the name shouldnt be fancy or cryptic. it should be straight to the point
CerberusX was much better than Monkey and made it a bit more of a serious product.

I think the name should appear easily when searching google etc. Sadly GameMaker has alredy been taken ;-)
