Hi all,

Wasn't sure on the best place to start this thread but I've started to create my first game using CerberusX!

I've started to develop a game with my son as he's keen to work with computers and the school doesn't seem to be doing anything with them on the IT side apart from bloody Word, Excel, etc.

Anyway!

So we have started the new game but while I can pick up new programming languages quite quickly I'm not so hot in graphics. Is there a "go to" web site with graphics beginners can use for free?

There seems to be a few by doing a quick search but was wondering if anyone had used any and if so which one's seem to be the best, IE quality of graphics, licensing issues, etc?

Thanks in advance

Ideally you should not rely on other peoples work unless you have commissioned them to do that work, but then there can be legal issues that can arise as one or two Indie developers have discovered in the past by going in that direction. The safest bet is to always create your own artwork and audio, but you have to check the licence of any third-party media that you use to create them. Therefore I would seriously recommend that you explore tutorials on creating pixel art, sprites or anything else to do with game media creation. The other reason why you should create your own is that pre-made media restricts you creatively.

But if you're just doing stuff for learning to program, then Reiner's Tilesets would be a good place to start.

You can find a list of tools many have used in the past from here.

Completely understand what you're saying. This was just to get started really, just to have some placeholder graphics in place rather than the simple shapes we have in place at the moment!

Thanks for the links also!

Welcome to our forums. :) I'm very happy you decided to use Cerberus. Feel free to create a thread in the showcase section when you want to show something.

It depends what you are looking for. You can find clip art easily enough at sites like OpenClipArt.org, but free sprites are relatively rare, and those you find (I thought of Reiner's tilesets too) are never quite what you want! You might be able to find various 'roguelike' tilesets that you can use. What sort of game are you making? Tetris, for example, can be made pretty much entirely with procedural graphics, i.e. graphics generated by the program.
