New MacBook Pro M1 Chip Monterey - Build Failed - Error executing 'xcodebuild -configuration Debug', return code=256

I have no idea where to start. I sold my gaming machine as I got a 5 year contract to do writing work so gaming and all that has now officially ended in my life. I still want to code in Cerberus as a hobby though.

I downloaded the prebuilt for macos from itch.io. I have the latest xcode installed and all os updates. If I try to build a mac app in debug, it throws this error.

Error executing 'xcodebuild -configuration Debug', return code=256

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Besides Xcode, do you have the XCode command line tools installed? xcodebuild is part of that.

Yes, XCode Command Line tools are installed and up to date.

I don't have a M1 machine and so can't test that myself. On my intel machine it compiles just fine.

I have managed to fix the issue thanks to you mentioning the command line build tools. I did a little digging and found the problem. You will only run into this issue with Cerberus if you installed XCode first, then installed the Command Line Build Tools separately either after the XCode installation finished or on a different day. Doing it this way creates a problem on Monterey. For it to work you would need to install XCode and the Command Line Build Tools at the same time together. I didn't do this.

The fix is to enter this in Terminal which will fix the problem.

sudo xcode-select -s /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer

After doing the above I can build the test app.
