The game is not fully finished yet, there are more features I want to add.

It is however fully playable and stable. You can download PC and Android versions here:

Password is: robo

The rules can be found here:

As this is a programming game, you should all fare fine without the rules :)
Just note that for the first round robots are virtual (kind of pale looking) and cannot shoot robots or get shot by other robots. They can however still get shot by board lasers and are affected by board elements.

I have not implemented the flame throwers yet and there is no tutorial yet. The first board is just a test area.

Have a go of it if you can. Any feed back is welcome. I've included the source code too. But for god sakes don't look at it. It is like the Necronomican of programming. People who have read it in the past have went insane.

By the way thanks for all the help I've gotten here

The AI is not great, but I am still working on it.

Looking forward to seeing this  Great work!

Are the graphics your own? Asking because of potential copyright infringment. And if there is one, I would hate to remove your post.

I'd hate to tell you this @Podge. STOP! working on this immediately and remove it from every where it can be downloaded. RoboRally is a registered trademark of Hasbro Inc. Now unless you've been hired by the owner or their representatives of the intellectual property to write a game based exactly on the board game, then you have opened yourself up to a lot of possible legal trouble. The least worst case is that you will receive a cease and desist notice, the worst is finding yourself being taken to court and sued. And even if you were hired by them, you'd more than likely be in trouble just for pre releasing it.

I have permission to use the graphics. Ultimately the name will change too. There are a ton of games inspired by Robo Rally with names like Robot Rally and they have been around for a long time. So I have thought about this and do not see a problem.

Make sure you have that down in writing and is signed by the creator or current owner of the material.

Never assume that because someone else has done it that you can do it too.
It's what cause a lot of problems with the old computer and console emulation scene. Someone gets the bright idea to write an application to emulate a PlayStation or a Nintendo Game Boy and bundles it with the firmware ROM's and up loads it to an app store. Then everyone else jumps on the band wagon and then wonder why Sony and Nintendo start threating legal action against any one that even thinks of writing an emulator for their systems.
So I have thought about this and do not see a problem.
But the owners of the intellectual property may see it differently. Always seek legal advise if you are doing any that may resemble a game too closely.

The graphics were made by a fan of the game like myself. I have mailed the owners of the IP asking for permission a year or two ago and got no response. Like I said there are numerous Robo Rally clones out there.

I am not doing this to make money. This is a hobby for me and a way to learn programming, nothing more. I appreciate the feedback though. Cheers.

Sorry to cause discomfort for you. Just to be clear. Germany (where I am from) is very restrictive regarding copyright. This site could be taken down if I allow to have copyright protected material posted here. And it doesn't matter if it is for a hobby or not.

So if you use your own graphics, the game is just inspired by the original board game, the name is changed, then it should be fine. If it is simply a digital version of the original board game, then it infringes the copyright of Hasbro and this place aka myself could be hold accountable for just showing a link to the game. So I just want to be on the safe side.

Btw. the left image, isn't that an original graphic from the board game?

I totally Understand Mike. I'm German too, I understand how nuts German laws can be. It didn't occur to me that my game could cause issues for either this site or yourself. The plan was always to change the cover art work and the name, it still is by the way. The graphics are absolutely not an issue as they are fan made and I have permission to use them.

The cover art however is from the original game. If I change the cover art and name, you can hopefully add this to the show case sometime.

So there is a possibility that they could be unknowingly be violating a trademark/copyright.

Individuals that contact a major company about IP's are rarely ever contacted back. You'd have more chance if you had used a solicitor that specialises in in such things.

Dozens of fan made licensed board games are hosted here, with title like Gloomhaven and Lord of the Rings stuff. This is no different to modding Skyrim. It's NOT an issue.

Fine, it can be an issue if the owners of the IP make it one, but they generally don't as legally crucifying fans of your game is a serious own goal.

I started this project back in about 1998 as no (decent) PC version was available and still isn't.

If my game is a problem for this site, then that is fine I will remove it. But to be honest, while the legal advice is valid and appreciated, that is not why I am here. I will change the name and the cover art work.

Look what I will do is protect this site by changing what needs to be changed. Other than that if the IP owners want to come after me for creating a game based on their IP then let them. I have no interest in a legal discussion here.
