Following on from this thread, here's a handy online tool to create variable width bitmap fonts. If offers the ability to fill with solid color, gradient or texture and apply outlines, shadows etc.
I found it wouldn't work with some TTF files (no idea why) and the load/save dialogs sometimes appear behind the browser window.
Fortunately, it offers the ability to save your font in various scalings. However, one thing to watch out for if you choose this - the text files will all have "font.png" in the top section as the related image, not the actual name of the image file it has provided. Therefore, edit the text file and make sure the png filename matches the actual file. If you don't choose different scalings there's no need to edit the text file as the downloaded png will be called 'font.png;
